CANCUN – Several tourist establishments in Cancun have been fined for non-compliance by the Federal Consumer Protection Agency (Profeco).

One of the establishments, Hotel Bonampak located in downtown Cancun, was fined by Profeco for illegal charges and fees not displayed. Complaints received by consumers against the hotel included improper collection on laundry and phone calls as well as charging additional fees for an extra person. The hotel has since been suspended from business.

Several other businesses in Cancun were found guilty of non-compliance for failure to publicly display prices. Fined by Profeco were two car rental businesses at the Cancun International Airport, Dollar Rent a Car and Fox Rent a Car and the restaurant, Las Pescadillas, at Plaza La Isla in the Cancun Hotel Zone.

Ernesto Nemer Álvarez, who became the new head of Profeco in February of this year, said that Cancun is one of the most important destinations in Mexico, which makes it important to take care of the consumer.

“It is important to be personally leading the efforts at airports, in bus stations, hotels, restaurants, vehicle rental agencies and amusement centers where abuses are committed by providers,” he explained.

He noted that in Quintana Roo there is a great responsibility on service providers, however Profeco receives complaints on services like timeshares and pay telephones as well as other services and that the penalties that apply range from 150 to 3 million pesos.

The federal official also noted that there is still the deliberation of placing a permanent consumer care module for foreigners being considered for Cancun so that they can more efficiently meet the necessary demands of consumers.
