10 Days of La Penita Patronales Fiesta: Celebrating with a Bang
By Tara Spears
For those seasonal residents of Jaltemba Bay, you miss out on the annual 10 days celebration that has entertainment for all ages. The vivid colored paper flags, papel picado, that adorn the main street of this small seaside town, sets the happy mood for the festival. A variety of events are offered at the La Penita town square: children’s rides, games of chance, live music, folkloric dance, and nightly fireworks on the malecon. In case anyone might forget that the Virgin is the reason for this party, early morning fireworks are set off daily at 4am to remind you to come to church to worship. One of the most popular events of this year’s festival was the Sunday evening band concert in the baseball field.
2015 Expansion of the La Penita Malecon
Local residents have stated that they have waited 40 years for the La Penita malecon to become an actuality. This week, the shoreline north of the existing malecon saw an abandoned building begin to come down which prompted lots of rumors of malecon development.
