2019 Certified Good for You: Jaltemba Bay Beaches
Tara A. Spears
Although western Mexico is known for its attractive coastline, only a few coastal communities can boast of beauty and a healthy environment. The three sister towns, Rincon de Guayabitos, Los Ayalas, and La Penita, comprise the lovely Jaltemba Bay on the Rivera Nayarit coast. Coral Island and the Rincon de Guayabitos beach both once again achieved their certification based on Mexican Official Standard for clean water quality, infrastructure and complementary programs. Now, not only does Jaltemba Bay stand out due to its natural beauty, ancient history, and typical Mexican culture but it is good for you!
As reported by the Mexican Ministry of Rural Development and Environment (SEDERMA) Rincon de Guayabitos received level one certification in the yearly testing this March (which is a high occupancy time for the area.) The president of the Hotel Association of the Municipality of Compostela, Alejandro Chávez Bustos said, “We are pleased by this achievement. This recognition is the coordinated work of the state government, the municipality and the hotel association and citizens. We have moved towards a clean beach since 2016, making a deliberate effort to raise the quality of the services offered to thousands of visitors.”
Another area businessman, Chávez Bustos, stressed that “the validation of certificates of clean beaches in Guayabitos and Isla del Coral, shows that teamwork pays off.” The community needs to thank government officials that have endorsed increased national and foreign tourism by committing to “continue taking care of the natural beauty and the environment with which our tourist destinations were blessed”.
One of the reasons that Jaltemba Bay beaches continue to receive certification is the effort to local businesses, residents, and seasonal visitors to keep the beach clean. The state government supports this effort by enacting laws to help the environment, such as the 2019 ban on the use of plastic bags, plastic straws and plastic utensil products. Within 18 months all coastal businesses must eliminate the use of plastic; such items must be replaced by items made of biodegradable materials.
Just a quick explanation as to why it matters that you visit an area with clean water: There are many diseases caused by water pollution. These include gastrointestinal diseases with diarrhea, vomiting, and fever; reproductive problems; neurological disorders; and even cancer. Anyone can be affected, but babies, young children, elderly individuals, pregnant women and especially those who have weakened immune systems, are susceptible to illnesses from various water contaminants.
If you love sunshine, water sports, crystal clear seas, good food, ecotourism and beach relaxation, the clean, beautiful beaches in Jaltemba Bay, Nayarit are the ideal destination for you.
