Miguel Fernandez: Los Ayala San Miguel Arcángel Medical Center

Some might attribute his journey to become a physician as destiny; others might recognize the hard work, talent and sacrifice that culminated in achieving a career goal. All will nod their head and agree that the childhood nickname ‘miguel arcángel’ describes the attributes of the adult: kind, helping people and animals, caring about protecting the environment. Was the nickname a harbinger of the future or did the name stick because it suits the man? Perhaps the man, unconsciously, evolved into his name? Regardless, once you meet Dr. Miguel Fernandez Scoofield, he does personify a modern day archangel!
Born is Guadalajara to hard working parents, Miguel always knew he wanted to study medicine. “As a child I had many pets and was always saving animals,” Miguel replied in perfect English. “I was fortunate that my parents were able to provide a bilingual education.” While Dr. Fernandez had the talent and dream of helping others, it was his family that encouraged him. All of Dr. Fernandez family still lives in the urban area but it is close enough to celebrate holidays together.
“When I was deciding where to continue my education and go to medical school, I had to assess what I valued most in life. I love the outdoors and the natural world so I checked out the coastal communities. I considered what would help me grow as a father, where would enable me to grow as a doctor, and the place had to have an unspoiled natural setting.” The small puebla of Los Ayala won his heart and became his home. “I love it here for me and my family!” 
In 2019, Fernandez and his wife obtained the former main street disco that had been empty for years. With lots of sweat, money and challenges the young couple have worked towards creating a modern medical center- the only medical service in Los Ayala. The family lives on the top level, creating a loft type home for their two children, Amelie, 1, and Diego, 4.
The first year Dr. Fernandez only made home visits to treat patients while work was being done on the office. As of 2021, the San Miguel Arcángel Medical Center (SMAMC) has a reception area, exam room and two patient treatment rooms that can also serve for overnight care. With a staff of three, Dr. Fernandez still makes house calls. The facility is clean, calming, and easily assessable to those with mobility limitations. Dr. Fernandez glows when he talks about his long term plan for the center. Presently, SMAMC provides diagnostic and yearly health examinations; Cardiologist; COVID-19 travel Test; gynecologist, medical treatment for chronic illnesses; rehabilitation; psychologist; urologist; and trauma care. In an effort to accommodate the vacationers, Dr. Fernandez accepts foreign health insurance plans and credit cards. So the next time you’re enjoying the surf until the jelly fish stings, don’t spend the rest of the trip being miserable-grab the plastic and get relief.
Very Important NOTE: If the office entrance door is closed, PLEASE RING THE BELL TO THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE PLANTER. Often times Dr. is in the building and will be able to assist you! Don’t leave without trying the bell.
The décor of the medical center-“My wife is totally in charge of the art,” quipped Fernandez. “She places things that I love: blue tang, parrot, and archangel-to make me smile!“ Such items are very calming and interesting to look at if you’re waiting.
Having such a talented, caring couple is a boost for our community. With the office located on the main street it is easily assessable from any part of Jaltemba Bay by car or taxi. Once you meet Dr. Fernandez you’ll instantly believe in archangels.
